How to Cut Unnecessary Words from Your Writing

Redline comparison showing have the ability to result in a reduction of becoming could slow
9 words became 2.

Nothing about the meaning changed.

Just this:

"have the ability to result in a reduction of"

became

"could slow."

That's the easiest way I know to improve writing.

Not by reaching for bigger words.

By deleting the ones you don't need.

The pattern shows up everywhere.

  • made a decision → decided
  • performed an analysis → analyzed
  • due to the fact that → because
  • prior to → before
  • at this point in time → now

Most first drafts confuse readers not because the ideas are bad.

They confuse readers because the ideas are buried.

Every extra phrase makes the reader work a little harder.

One phrase doesn't matter.

A hundred do.

That's what I'm building.

Not an AI that writes for you.

An AI editor that redlines the clutter.

One unnecessary phrase at a time.
